Mapping Wetlands in Zambia Using Seasonal Backscatter Signatures Derived from ENVISAT ASAR Time Series
Wetlands are considered a challenging environment for mapping approaches based on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data due to their often complex internal structures and the diverse backscattering mechanisms caused by vegetation, soil moisture and flood dynamics contributing to the resulting imagery. In this study, a time series of >100 SAR images acquired by ENVISAT during a time period of ca. ...
متن کاملThe relationship between ERS-2 SAR backscatter and soil moisture: generalization from a humid to semi-arid transect
A linear relationship between ERS-2 SAR backscattering coe cient (s0 ) and volumetric soil moisture was determined at both ends of a rainfall gradient in Israel. A Normalized radar Backscatter soil Moisture Index (NBMI) was derived and related strongly to soil moisture concentration. This index may allow the mapping of soil moisture conditions over large areas with C band SAR data.
متن کاملThe Effects of Changes in Loblolly Pine Biomass and Soil Moisture on ERS-1 SAR Backscatter
E r young (< 15 years old) lobloUy pine stands at Duke Forest (North Carolina, USA), when the ground was wet, the observed ERS-1 SAR backscatter from short-grass fields of 0.05 kg /m 2 biomass was >~ the backscatter from the stands, and there was no significant correlation between the backscatter and biomass (r 2 = 0.19). Under dry soil conditions, the backscatter increased about 2-3 dB as the ...
متن کاملInfluence of Vegetation Cover on the Oh Soil Moisture Retrieval Model: A Case Study of the Malinda Wetland, Tanzania
Soil moisture is an important parameter that drives agriculture, climate and hydrological systems. In addition, retrieval of soil moisture is important in the analysis as well as its influence on these systems. Radar imagery is best suited for this retrieval due to its all-weather capability and independence from solar irradiation. Soil moisture retrieval was done for the Malinda Wetland, Tanza...
متن کاملCombining the Microwave Model Cloud and the Growth Model Promet-v for Soil Moisture Retrieval from Ers-sar Data
Within the frame of the project GeoBIRD (ESA contract 12950/98/NL/GD entitled "Retrieval of geoand bio-physical information from remote sensing data") an attempt was made to derive soil moisture by combining the microwave remote sensing model CLOUD and the land surface process model PROMET-V (PROcess oriented Modular Environment and Vegetation model. Three test sites in Europe, which show diffe...
